Explaning Depression Flashcards
What does ‘cognitive approach’ mean
Mental processes
Depression is viewed as a result of what
Irrational or faulty thinking/ cognitive processes
Outline Ellis’s ABC model (1962)
A- activating event: usually a negative event that causes irrational beliefs
B- beliefs: irrational beliefs like viewing something as a major disaster when something doesn’t go smoothly (i-can’t-stand-it is) or striving for perfection (musterbation)
C- consequences: as a result of the steps before the can have consequences. For example depression
Outline Becks negative triad (1967)
-Explains why people a vulnerable to depression
FAULTY INFO PROCESSING - focusing on the negatives
NEGATIVE SELF SHEMA - interpret all info about themselves negatively
THE NEGATIVE TRIAD - negative view of the self/ the world/ the future
What are the features of the negative triad
NEGATIVE VIEWS OF….
-THE SELF 🧍♀️
- THE WORLD 🌎
- THE FUTURE 👀
Strength for Becks negative triad
(R/S)
P: Research support
E: Cohen et al (2019) tracked he development of 473 adolescents and regularly measured their cognitive vulnerability. It found that showing cognitive vulnerability predicted later depression
E: TST there is an association between cognitive vulnerability & depression
Strength for Becks negative triad
(RWA)
P: Real world applications
E: Cohen concluded that screening people and identifying those most at risk. It could also be applied to CBT.
E: TMT an understanding of cognitive vulnerability is useful in more than 1 clinical practice
Strength for the ABC model
(RWA)
P: real wold applications
E: the treatment used in CBT is RATIONAL EMOTIVE BEHAVIOUR THERAPY (rebt) when a therapist challenges the the belfries of the depressed person to alter their thinking/ beliefs making them unhappy
E: it has proven to be effective and TMT it has real world value
Weakness of ABC model
P: Reactive and endogenous depression
E: it only explains the reactive depression (as a result of the environment) not endogenous depression where there is no clear link to a stressful life situation
E: TMT the model can only explain some cases = it is a partial explanation
How is both Ellis and Becks models limited?
Doesn’t explain hoe some depressed People experimenter hallucinations or extreme anger or delusions.
This is not explained by the cognitive explanation. TMT its a partial explanation
