Outline the behavioural characteristics of OCD
A
- Compulsions are repetitive - fell compelled to repeat the behaviour
- Compulsions reduce anxiety - For most the behaviour is an attempt to manage the anxiety
- Avoidance - keeping away from situation that may trigger the anxiety

Outline the emotional characteristics
A
- Anxiety & distress - an unpleasant emotional experience bec. Of the powerful anxiety it causes.
- Accompanied depression - the compulsive behaviour tends to bring relief but this is temporary
- Guilt and disgust - Rational and irrational that is directed towards themselves or against something + Hyper-vigilance

Outline the cognitive characteristics
A
- Obsessive thoughts - over 90% of people w. OCD show this.
It’s a main feature. These thoughts are often unpleasant. - Cognitive coping strategies - used to deal with the obsessions e.g meditation
- Insight- often aware that their compulsions are not rational.
