  1. Compulsions are repetitive - fell compelled to repeat the behaviour
  2. Compulsions reduce anxiety - For most the behaviour is an attempt to manage the anxiety
  3. Avoidance - keeping away from situation that may trigger the anxiety

Outline the emotional characteristics

A
  1. Anxiety & distress - an unpleasant emotional experience bec. Of the powerful anxiety it causes.
  2. Accompanied depression - the compulsive behaviour tends to bring relief but this is temporary
  3. Guilt and disgust - Rational and irrational that is directed towards themselves or against something + Hyper-vigilance

Outline the cognitive characteristics

A
  1. Obsessive thoughts - over 90% of people w. OCD show this.
    It’s a main feature. These thoughts are often unpleasant.
  2. Cognitive coping strategies - used to deal with the obsessions e.g meditation
  3. Insight- often aware that their compulsions are not rational.
    Necessary for diagnosis
