- Major depressive disorder : severe but often short term
- Persistent depressive disorder: long term or reoccurring depression inc. sustained major depressive disorder
- Disruptive mood dysregulation disorder: childhood temper tantrums
- Premestural dysphoric disorder: disruption for mood prior or during menstration

Name the 3 behavioural characteristics

- Activity levels: Typically people have reduced levels of energy. In some cases it can cause PSYCHOMOTOR ACTIVATION - struggle to relax.
- Disruption to sleep and eating: Can be a reduction or an excessive increase in sleep and eating
- Aggression and self harm: Can become aggressive. This can be directed towards the the self or others

Name the emotional characteristics
A
Lowered mood: exp. Of feeling down/blue/ or lethargic
Anger: negative emotions. Are experienced inc. anger towards self or others this can cause self harm
Lowered self esteem: (how we can view ourselves) they can view themselves negatively and begin to hate themselves

- Poor concentration: unable to stick to a task & make decisions that they would usually be able to
- Dwelling on the negative: more inclined to focus on the negative of a situation
- Absolutist thinking: called black and white thinking where they see a situation as absolute
