Behavioural characteristics of phobias

PAE

A

PANIC: in response to the phobic stimulus. E.g crying, screaming or running away

AVOIDANCE: goes though effort not to come into contact with the phobic stimulus. Can make daily life difficult

ENDURANCE: chooses to remain in the presence of the phobic stimulus. It’s an alternative response

Emotional characteristics of phobias

AF

A

ANXIETY: an emotional response that makes the person unable to relax, uncomfortable and can increase arousal
This can be long term

FEAR: immediate when encountered the phobic stimulus and is te tense but a short response. It’s often unreasonable to the stimulus

Cognitive characteristics of phobias

A

SELECTIVE ATTENTION: to the phobic stimulus mailing it hard to look away and may struggle to concentrate if its in a room w. Them.

IRRATIONAL BELIEFS: having unfounded thoughts in reaction to the stimulus. Doesn’t have a basis in reality and increases the pressure on the person.

COGNITIVE DISTORTIONS: perception of the phobia becomes unrealistic or inaccurate
