Explanations of Attachment - Theory 2 - Bowlby's Monotropic Theory of Attachment Flashcards
What sort of approach does Bowlby’s theory take of explaining behaviour?
An evolutionary approach.
What is the notion of adaptiveness based on?
Darwin’s theory of evolution.
What does Darwin’s theory of evolution state?
That any genetically determined behaviour that enhances an individual’s survival (and reproduction) will be naturally selected.
Why is Darwin’s theory of evolution relevant to Bowlby’s theory of attachment?
Bowlby argued that there would have been a strong selective pressure for close attachment (between males and females) for humans at that time.
What did Bowlby assume to create his theory?
That a similar process to imprinting in animals (based on the work by Lorez) operates in humans.
Why dis attachment behaviour evolve?
To ensure survival - an infant who is not well attached is less likely to be cared for.
