Caregiver-infant interactions - Meltzoff and Moore Flashcards
In what year was it carried out?
1977.
What did they conduct?
A controlled observation.
What did they observe?
The behaviour of an infant in response to 4 different stimuli.
What were the 4 stimuli?
Three different faces and one hand gesture.
How did the observer watch the infants?
They watched recordings of them in real time, slow motion and frame by frame.
What is the inter-rater reliability in this observation?
The use of more than one experimenter.
What is the intra-rater reliability in this observation?
The experimenter looking over and over (different speeds).
What did the independent observers not know?
They did not know what the infant had seen.
What were the observers asked to record?
All instances of infant tongue protrusions and head movements.
What did the observers use to record all instances of infant tongue protrusions and head movements?
Behavioural categories.
What is one example of a behavioural category?
Mouth opening = abrupt jaw drop opening the mouth across the entire lips.
How many times did each observer score the tapes? (intra-rater reliability)
2.
What were all scores over?
All scores were greater than 0.92.
What did they find?
That there was an association between the infant behaviour and that of the adult model.
What is a controlled observation? (2 things)
Lab setting so you are able to control the variables.
Specific behaviour being observed (because of the use of categories)
