Explanations For Forgetting - Interference Theory Flashcards
1
Q
What are the two explanations of forgetting?
A
Interference theory and retrieval failure due to absence of cues
2
Q
What is interference theory divided into?
A
Proactive interference and Retroactive interference
3
Q
Describe what is meant by interference theory?
A
- suggests forgetting is due to 2 lots of info coded at the same time, being confused in the LTM
- 1 memory disrupts the ability to recall another memory, this is more likely to happen when info is similar
- there are two types of interference, proactive and retroactive
4
Q
Define proactive interference
A
- forgetting occurs when past info disrupts recall of new info stored
- e.g. memory of old phone number means u forget new one
5
Q
Define retroactive interference
A
- forgetting occurs when new info disrupts recall of past info stored
e.g. memory of new license plate means u forget old one
6
Q
What are the three AO3 points to evaluate interference theory as an explanation of forgetting?
A
RTS by McGeoch and McDonald
Discussion - high in reliability
Weakness - lacks mundane realism
