Explain the effects of participant expectations and researcher bias in qualitative research Flashcards
1
Q
What is participant expectation?
A
- participant factors that influence outcome of research (e.g. participant ideas about how they should behave)
2
Q
What is researcher bias?
A
- researcher factors such as the research\ beliefs or values that could potentially bias the research process (e.g. gay researcher researching discrimination towards gay men might ignore evidence to the contrary)
3
Q
What do Stauss and Corbin (1998) think?
A
- bias not only inevitable
- but desirable
= adds richness of knowldge
4
Q
Explain: Potential effects of participant expectation (5)
in qualitative research
A
- lead them to behaviour in ways that aren’t natural in order to please
- participant disagrees with interpretation of data (e.g. self-preservation = reveals sensitive issue)
- participants bring different points of view (e.g. do not want to criticize manager they work for)
- social desirability
- participants try to be consistent in answers and a previous answer influences their current one
5
Q
Explain: Potential effects of researcher bias (5)
in qualitative research
A
- researchers schema bias process and outcome = data reflection of researchers ideas = must be reflexive
- researcher may not give enough attention to social process and participants’ experiences (e.g.. divorce focus group participants influence each other)
- process takes long time = researcher changes attitudes to the project/participants = affected data (e.g. researcher in prison could dislike participants)
- body language during interview = bias collection (e.g. shocked face when they hear something they didn’t expect)

Q
Explain the effects of participant expectations and researcher bias in qualitative research
A
Explain: detailed account + reasons and causes
What is:
-participant expectation
-researcher bias
