Experiments Flashcards
Define lab experiment
The iv is manipulated by the researcher and the experiment is carried out in a controlled setting away from ps natural setting
Strengths of lab experiments
High controls mean research is standardised and easy to replicate so is reliable. More control over extraneous variables so cause an effect relationship can be established
Weaknesses of lab experiments
Low ecological validity due to artificial settings. Chance of demand characteristics or experimenter effects may mean results lack validity
Define field experiment
The iv is manipulated by the researcher but the experiment is carried out using ps in normal surroundings/ not contrived
Strengths of field experiment
Behaviour is likely to have more ecological validity, less chance of demand characteristics
Weaknesses of field experiment
Less control over extraneous variables which may bias the result also means less standardised/ replicable. There may be ethical issues if ps don’t know if in experiment
Define quasi experiment
The iv is naturally occurring/ not manipulated by the researcher
Strengths of a quasi experiment
Can study variables researchers can’t or would be unethical to manipulate e.g the weather or orphans. High levels of ecological validity, less demand cs?
Weaknesses of a quasi experiment
Can be difficult to replicate, Lack of control over extraneous variables, may be more expensive or time consuming , lack of control over independent variable
