Experimental Design Flashcards
What is repeated measures
Using the same group of ps in each condition
What is independent measures design
Using different groups in different conditions
What is matched ps design
Using different people in each condition but try to make ps similar on certain characteristics that might influence findings. Done by testing individual, grouping them on similar scores and placing one member from each group into each condition
Strengths of repeated measures design
Participant variables will not affect results and half the number of Ps are needed.
Weaknesses of repeated measures design
Risk of order effects (better practice/or worse fatigue effects) or demand characteristics p. This can be reduced by counterbalancing (half do one order, half do other order) this may take time and money. If ps drop out, data will be lost from both conditions not just one
Strengths of independent measures design
No risk of order effects, data collection less time consuming is all conditions simultaneous, using the same task so less extraneous variables?
Weaknesses of independent measures design
Different ps for each condition which takes time and money, results affected by p variables
Strengths of matched participants design
No order effects and less p variables as matched on relevant characteristics
Weaknesses of matched ps design
Different ps in each condition takes more time and money, matching is complicated, and may not be matched perfectly
