Experimental Designs Flashcards
What are repeated measures design?
Each participant carries out the experiment twice in different conditions. To avoid order effects we would have to use counterbalancing. Half of the participants could do no noise followed the next day by noise. The other half could do noise first and then no noise next day. This way order effects appear in both conditions balancing themselves out
What are independent groups design?
Use different people in each experimental condition. each participant is randomly allocated to one condition.
What are matched pairs design?
Involves having two separate groups of participants who are matched on some important variable in order to make them as identical as possible. The ideal participant in a matched pairs design would be twins, with each twin in each condition. as they are as matched an individual could be. The problem with this design is that its difficult to find a sufficient amount of twins or similarly matched people therefore it’s rarely used
