Experimental Design (+Pilot Studies) Flashcards
1
Q
What are the 3 ways a participant can be allocated?
A
- Independent groups
- Repeated measures
- Matched pairs
2
Q
Independent groups
A
- Different participants are used in each of the conditions.
3
Q
2 advantages of Independent groups
A
- There are no order effects.
> Participant does better/ worse on the second task - Less chance of demand characteristics
4
Q
2 disadvantages of Independent groups
A
- Need more participants as each participant is only used once
- Individual differences
> Unfair to compare the results of the two groups
5
Q
Repeated Measures
A
- Same participants used in all conditions.
6
Q
2 advantages of Repeated Measures
A
- No individual differences
> Same person is measured in both conditions - Fewer participants
7
Q
2 disadvantages of Repeated Measures
A
- Order Effects
- If there is a gap between the two testing conditions it is possible that some participants may not return for the second condition.
8
Q
Matched pairs
A
- Different, but similar participants are used in each of the conditions.
- Matched across the groups on any characteristics judged to be important for that particular study
9
Q
2 advantages of matched pairs
A
- No order effects
- Problems of individual differences are reduced
10
Q
2 disadvantages of matched pairs
A
- Matching is difficult
- Twice as many participants are needed - more costly
11
Q
What is a Pilot Study?
A
- Small scale trial run
> Test procedure
> Look for issues
