experimental design Flashcards
what are the two categories that experimental design can broadly be fit into?
- all participants do all parts of the IV
- participants are split between each part of the IV
what are independent groups?
when separate groups of participants experience different conditions of the IV - the performance between these groups would be compared
what are repeated measures?
when all participants are tested on all conditions of the IV - the performance between each condition would be compared
what are the cons of using independent groups?
they can practice the DV that can lead to demand characteristics (order effects)
what are matched pairs?
participants are paired together on variables relevant to the experiment (e.g - gender, age)
what is counterbalancing?
when half the participants take part in condition A then B, and the other half take part in B then A
