experimental design Flashcards
independent variable
is the variable that is deliberately changed on purpose by the experimenter
forming the ‘if; part of the statement
Dependant variable
is the direct response to the independent variable. it’s value/response is due to changes to the independent variable
forms the ‘then’ part of the statement
hypothesis
is a suggested solution or outcome to a specific scientific finding
if(IV) then (DV)
control
the group or standard that we are comparing everything to
controlled
-factors held constant
- increase the validity of the experimental design
errors
factors that are unable to be held constant
random errors
inconsistently and randomly and are often caused by human error.
can affect the precession of the experiment. to overcome this increase the sample size as required
systematic errors
occurs consistently is often a problem with design or methodology. it can effect the accuracy of the experiment.
to overcome thins a systematic repeat is vital for the validity
Extraneous variables
extraneous variables are factors that may show a false correlation between the dependent and independent variables leading to a null or invalid hypothesis and an effect on the outcome of the data
graphs
the resolution refers to the level fo detail given in results. ensure all data has the same resolution
reliability
Reliability refers to how consistently a method measures something.
accuracy
Accuracy refers to the closeness of a measured value to a standard or known value
