Experiment Design Flashcards
1
Q
Repeated measures
A
The same participants take part in two different conditions, e.g. studying for one test with TV and one without TV
“Within groups”
2
Q
Independent groups
A
Different participants take part in each ‘condition’ of the study, e.g. one group studies with TV and one group without TV
“Between groups”
3
Q
Matched pairs
A
Participants are matched ( e.g. two students with similar scores on earlier tests ) and one takes part in each condition
4
Q
Strengths and limitations for independent groups
A
- Participants only need to take part once - don’t get tired or have ‘ practice effects ‘
- But different people = different results
5
Q
Strengths and limitations for repeated measures
A
- Need fewer participants than independent groups, and compare ‘ like with like ‘
- But participant get tired, bored, or get better with practice
6
Q
Strengths and limitations for matched pairs
A
- Similar advantages to independent groups, and reduce the difference
- But need to test beforehand, and may not get an accurate match
