Q

Lab experiment

A

Manipulating the IV with a controlled environment
+ high validity and reliability as it is a controlled environment reducing extraneous variables so we can establish cause and effect
- lacks ecological validity due an artificial environment and low internal validity as participants are aware of the research causing demand characteristics

Q

Field experiment

A

Manipulating the IV with a natural environment
+ high ecological validity, high internal validity as they are not affected by demand characteristics
-low internal validity and reliability as it is not a controlled environment

Q

Quasi experiment

A

Naturally occurring IV in a controlled environment
+ high ethics due to no manipulation and free from researcher bias
- lacks control of the IV so we can’t establish cause+effect and time consuming to collect the sample

Q

Repeated measures

A

Same participants in each conditions
+ no individual differences and isn’t consuming
- order effects as pps would get more tired and is more time consuming

Q

Independent measures

A

Different participants across each condition
+no order effects and less time consuming
- need more participants and individual differences may affect the results

Q

Matched pairs

A

Different participants in each conditions but have a matched pair depending on their age or gender etc.
+ no order effects as its less time consuming and is more generalisable to our target population
- hard to establish pairs and time consuming

Q

What are order effects

A

If the participants get worse during an experiment it is due to fatigue and borders
If the participants get better during an experiment it is due to practice
