collection of participants Flashcards
random sampling
names of target population are drawn out randomly, where everyone has an equal chance of being selected.
+ eliminates researcher bias
- can still end up unrepresentative
opportunity sampling
the researcher selects participants who are available at that time
+ quick and easy
- experimenter bias
volunteer/self-selected
participants put themselves forward to participate
+ ethical as the pps want to take part
- unrepresentative as only certain people are likely to volunteer
systematic sampling
selecting every nth person from the target population
+sample is evenly spread out across the target population= no researcher bias
- doesnt include representation of subgroups
stratified sampling
working out proportions of the different types of people in the target population
+ very representative
- time consuming
snowball sampling
the researcher chooses 1 participant, that participant will pick the next participant and so on.
+ quick and easy
- unrepresentative sample
