Expansion and contraction of materials Flashcards
When does material expand?
When solids, liquids and gases are heated.
When does material contract?
When solids, liquids and gases are cooled down.
What happens when a solid is heated?
The particles of a solid only vibrate. When a solid is heated, the particles receive additional energy. The particles vibrate faster. If they are heated more, the movement of the particles increases and they move further apart, even though it is still in a fixed position and the solid expands.
What happens when liquids and gases are heated?
Liquids and gases are in a state of constant motion. |f it is heated, the particles move faster and they move further apart, therefore the material expands.
What happens when a material is cooled?
The movement of the particles decreases and they move closer together, therefore the material contracts.
What happens when a material expand?
The spaces between the particles get bigger.
What happens when a material contract?
The spaces between the particles get smaller.
