Density Flashcards
What does all matter possess?
Mass
What is mass measured in?
Grams or kilograms
With what do you measure mass?
Triple beam balance, mass meter or electronic scale
With what do you measure the volume of liquids?
Measuring cylinder, burette or pipette
The general units for volume of materials are?
Cubic meter (m3), cubic centimeter (cm3) or cubic millimeter (mm3)
What material has the greatest density?
The material with the largest mass per cm3
What does the density of material depend on?
- The nature of the particles and the strength of the forces between the particles.
- The size and type of particles it is made of.
- The size of the spaces between the particles.
How do you calculate the density of a material?
Mass divided by the volume of the specific material
Density = mass/volume
What unit is used for density?
g.cm3
What role does density play in whether a material floats or sinks?
A material with a lower density will float on a liquid with a higher density.
Examples of materials that floats are:
- Ice (lower density) floats on soda (higher density).
- Oil (lower density) floats on water (higher density).
- Cork (lower density) floats on water (higher density)
What is the density of water?
1g.cm3
Arrange the following materials in order of increasing density:
Lead / cork / water / zinc / ice
- Cork
- Ice
- Water
- Zinc
- Lead
