Exotic Pulm Pathogens Flashcards
1
Q
Characteristics of Bacillus anthracis
A
- GP rod in chains
- encapsulated
- Spore forming
- Facultative intracellular pathogen
- produces anthrax toxin
2
Q
Transmission of Bacillus anthracis
A
- GI
- Cutaneous
- Inhaled*
*more serious form of disease and results in death
3
Q
Clinical manifestations and Dx of Bacillus anthracis infection (Anthrax)
A
- Disease onset begins 4-6 day after inhalation but can take up to 6 weeks
- persists within macrophages for long periods - CXR and CT: widened mediastinum w/ pleural effusions
- Antibody titers in the serum (Blood or resp. secretion) tested directly for toxins
4
Q
How does anthrax cause death?
A
- Blockage of pneumonic lymph vessels => progressive pulm edema
- Macrophages responding to infection release cytokines that cause septic shock and death
5
Q
Tx of Bacillus anthracis
A
60 days Ciprofloxacin
- Severe cases: IV cipro with additional antibiotic
6
Q
Characteristics of Brucellosis spp. (Brucellosis or Malta fever)
A
- Small GN coccobaccilus
- intracellular
- endemic in domesticated livestock
- infection results from exposure of working with animals or consuming unpasteurized dairy products obtained from them
