Exhibits Flashcards
Why is the chain of evidence so important?
If one of the steps cannot be proved, or is missing, it could raise doubt about whether the exhibit is in fact the article found at the scene, and it may not be admitted
What is the meaning of the term “chain of evidence”?
To prove that the exhibit produced in court is the one that was located at the scene, you must be able to show the court the steps taken in relation to the exhibit, and by whom.
(Each person must be able to detail how they cared for, safeguarded and preserved the exhibit while it was under their control, and to whom they passed it on.)
What is the procedure for dealing with an exhibit from its initial location until it is produced in court
- Take possession of the exhibit
- Record it in your notebook about where you found it
- Label it
- Confirm with the victim if applicable if they recognise the exhibit
- Put the exhibit in the exhibit locker
- finger print if necessary
- Uplift the exhibit for court
