Exercise Principles and Selecting Activities and Rules of Games Flashcards
When designing physical fitness activities…
you should utilize the principles of FITT or FITS to foster continued interest and improvement in students.
F requency - how often? do you jog x2 a week?
I ntensity- how hard? sprinting-walking-jogging
T ime- how long? an hour?
T ype- Cardio? anaerobic? flexibility?
( or Specificity, same as type)
When considering type of exercise…
be sure to include activities that help students improve their “comprehensive fitness levels” (don’t want to ONLY improve flexibility or only strength) and give students an opportunity to monitor improvements in “overall body composition”. (monitor ratio muscle to fat) -can measure by..
BIA (Bioelectrical Impedance Assessment) electrodes attached to body. Based on resistance of body to electricity, we can see fat to muscle because they can conduct electricity differently.
Skinfold test- basically grabbing the fat on your arm and measuring it.
Height and circumference measurements- circumference of neck, or waist, based on proportion of height they would determine what range you fall in.
BMI- Body Mass Index- based on height, you compare you height and your weight meet, and where you fit in the index.
**BIA is more accurate than others.

What games can you choose for Physical Education and what are you teaching by playing them?
Four square- highly adaptable and can be used to teach manual dexterity, strategy, and social skills. Can change the rules alot. How to use your hands and body. teaches strategy, social skills.
other important things to keep in mind when selecting physical activities.
- ) Make sure activities are age appropriate
- ) Always strive to select activities that give ALL students a chance to participate and achieve. (THIS IS THE MOST IMPORTANT) All about inclusion and adaptation. Must work for the class as a whole.
- ) When possible, select activities that integrate principles from other content areas. (studying culture- like stick ball)
Basic rules of football.
Team are organized into offense and defense. Offense, moves the ball. A system of 4 downs is used. Move it ten yards. Try to score in the end zone before the other team gets it.
-Running, passing, punting (give other team a worse field position), and kicking are utilized to move the ball.
Basic rules of Baseball
Game is organized into 9 innings
- each team gets its turn to bat each inning
- if a ball is caught in the air, if it is thrown to a base before a player reaches it (1st base), or if a player is tagged (with a player holding the ball), he is out.
Basic Rules of Basketball.
Organized players into guards (handle ball, bring up and down the court), forwards (drive in for shots, from the outside as well), and centers (more under the basket, larger players on the team, rebounding, shorter shots). The ball is moved by passing and dribbling. No traveling.
Points are scored via field goals (inside 2 points, outside 3 poimts) and three throws (fouls, no one can block their shot).
Basic rules of soccer.
only goalie may use hands. Knee, heads, or feet can move the ball.
-Corner kicks and free kicks are awarded when the ball goes out of bounds or when a player commits a foul.
