Exercise Physiology Flashcards
Atherosclerosis
Where arteries become clogged with fatty substances
LDLs
Low-Density Lipoproteins
Transports cholesterol in the blood, to the tissues
Classed as bad cholesterol - linked to increased risk of heart disease
HDLs
High-Density Lipoproteins
Transports excess cholesterol in the blood back to the liver
Classed as good cholesterol because it lowers risk of heart disease
What Vitamins do you need to know
C - Immune system - maintains bones/teeth/connective tissue
- Green Veg & Fruits
D - Absorption of Calcium & helps with Phosphocreatine recovery
- Sunlight, Dairy, Supplements
B1 - Break down food & release energy - keeps nervous system healthy
- Yeast, wholegrain, nuts
B2 - Break down food & release energy - keeps skin, eyes and nervous system healthy
- Dairy, Liver, cereals & fruit
B6 - Helps form Haemoglobin - helps body store and use energy
- Meat, fish & eggs
B12 - Makes RBCs - releases energy from foof
- Red meat, dairy & fish
What Mineral do you need to know
Calcium - strong bones & teeth, efficient nerve & muscle contraction
Sodium - Regulates fluid levels in the body, linked to an increase in blood pressure and thus a stroke/heart attack
Iron - Helps the formation of Haemoglobin in RBCs, therefore improves stamina. Lack of can lead to anaemia
Dehydration
A condition that occurs when the body loses more fluid than it takes in
Negative Effects:
- Increased blood viscosity
- Reduced sweating and therefore poor thermoregulation
- Reduction in exchange of waste products/transportation of nutrients
- Increased HR, resulting in lower Stroke Volume
