Exercise Limitations Flashcards
Emphysema
A condition in which the air sacs of the lungs are damaged and enlarged, causing breathlessness (caused by smoking)
COPD
Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (emphysema, asthma, chronic bronchitis)
Fibromyalgia
Widespread muscle pain and tenderness
Sprain
Acute injury to a ligament caused by sudden trauma to a joint. Symptoms: pain, swelling, discoloration, loss of motion and use, and joint instability. Avoid exercises that use the joint until pain is minimal or no longer present.
Strain
Injury to a muscle from either acute or chronic over exertion. Symptoms: pain, loss of motion, reduced strength. No ballistic stretching or strenuous exercise.
Tendonitis
Inflammation of a tendon or muscle-tendon junction from overuse (repeated stress without adequate recovery) symptoms: pain, swelling, loss of function. Avoid high repetition or heavy loading, caution with ballistic movements.
Plantar fasciitis
Microtearing/inflammation of the fascia at or near its attachment to the calcaneus bone due to overloading or over stretching the calcaneus. Treatment: rest, ice, massage, stretching, orthotics, surgery
Rotator cuff impingement stretching
Stretch the posterior cuff but not anterior, don’t do lat pull downs behind the neck or pull ups behind the neck (too much pressure on the shoulder)
Lateral epicondylitis
Tennis elbow (pain outside of elbow). Encourage stretching for all motions of the wrist, lighter loads for the wrist, change hand positions often when cycling
ACL tear
Anterior cruciate ligament. Caused by rapid deceleration. Treatment for partial tear: rice and rehabilitation. Large tear/complete rupture: surgery
Bursa
A fluid-filled sac that functions as a gliding surface to reduce friction between moving tissues of the body. (Two major ones of the hip)
Stroke
Often have coronary heart disease (CHD). Caused by years of high blood pressure, high cholesterol, and obesity/unhealthy lifestyle
Cardiovascular diseases
Anything that affects the structures or functions of the heart: heart attack, stroke, heart valve problems
