Exercise Gudelines For Americans Flashcards
Regular physical activity results in
Decreased chance of premature mortality.
For health benefits adults should do
150 min/week of moderate-intensity activity
Or 75 min/week of vigorous-intensity physical activity, or a combined or moderate and vigorous for bouts of no less than 10 minutes at a time.
For added benefits
Adults should perform 300 min, or 5 hours a week of moderate intensity activity, or 150 min of vigorous-intensity activity.
Adults should also perform muscle strengthening activities
Twice a week including every large muscle group.
General recommendations based on research:
Regular physical activity reduces the risk of many adverse health outcomes.
• Some physical activity is better than none.
• For most health outcomes, additional benefits occur as the amount of physical activity increases through higher intensity, greater frequency, and/or longer duration.
• Most health benefits occur with at least 150 minutes (2 hours and 30 minutes) a week of moderate intensity physical activity, such as brisk walking. Additional benefits occur with more physical activity.
• Both aerobic (endurance) and muscle-strengthening (resistance) physical activity
are beneficial.
• Health benefits occur for children and adolescents, young and middle-aged adults,
older adults, and those in every studied racial and ethnic group.
• The health benefits of physical activity occur for people with disabilities.
• The benefits of physical activity far outweigh the possibility of adverse outcomes.
To avoid soreness
Start gradually and increase challenge gradually. people with special health concerns need the clearance of their doctor before starting any exercise program. Same goes for men over 40 and women over 50.
Us dept of health and human services published the first guidelines for activity for Americans in 2008. After extensive research by experts they concluded that:
“only 21% of Americans met the guidelines for both aerobic and muscle-strengthening activity, based on their participation in leisure-time physical activity.”
with 30% of Americans performing an “insufficient amount” of activity and 49% of the popula-
tion sedentary.
