Exercise 9 Flashcards
Are cranial nerves part of the PNS?
Yes
Where do cranial nerves enter the CNS?
the brainstem (besides the olfactory nerve)
Where do most. cranial nerves function?
the head or cervical region
Where does the vagus nerve function?
innervates viscera in the thoracic and abdominal cavities
Do cranial nerves decussate?
no
Does the optic pathway (optic nerves) decussate?
yes
The axons of the sensory neurons that carry the info from the temporal fields of view ____
decussate
The axons of the sensory neurons that. carry the info from. the nasal fields of. view _____
do not decussate / remain ipsilateral
where are sensory receptors for olfaction location?
nasal epithelium
Cranial Nerve i
Olfactory nerve
What all are the receptors and optic nerve responsible for?
visual images, providing sensory info regarding the amount of light entering the eye through the pupil which is used to. regulate the contraction of the muscles of the iris and the resulting dilation and constriction of the pupil; also sensory. info regarding whether or. not an object is in focus
accommodation
changing the focal point between far and close
Cranial Nerve II
Optic nerve
Cranial nerve III
Oculomotor nerve
innervates superior rectus, medial rectus, inferior rectus, inferior oblique muscle, pupillary constrictor muscle of the iris, ciliary muscle and elevator muscles of. the upper eyelid
Cranial nerve IV
trochlear nerve
superior oblique muscle
Cranial nerve VI
abducens
lateral rectus muscle
strabismus
pupils that are unintentionally oriented medially result in crossed eyes or this
Cranial Nerve V
Trigeminal nerve
the sensory components of this nerve detects cutaneous stimulation of the face and the cornea and the motor components innervate the muscles of mastication
Cranial Nerve VII
Facial Nerve
sensory component used for gustation or taste and the motor function is for facial expressions (Bell’s palsy)
Cranial nerve VIII
vestibulocochlear nerve
vestibular branch carries sensory info from the vestibular apparatus regarding balance, equilibrium, acceleration and deceleration, and body position relative to gravity
the cochlear branch of the nerve carries the sensory info from the cochlea regarding hearing
Cranial Nerve IX
Glossopharyngeal nerve
mixed nerve; carries taste info from gustatory receptors in the posterior one third of the tongue
Cranial neve X
Vagus nerve
mixed nerve; carries taste info from gustatory receptors in the pharynx. and epiglottis
Cranial nerve XI
Spinal accessory nerve
motor function regulates action of some of the throat muscles as well as the sternocleidomastoid and trapezius muscle; assist in movement of. the head and shoulders
sternocleidomastoid turns head to opposite side
trapezius elevates the shoulder
Cranial nerve XII
hypoglossal nerve; innervates the muscles of the tongue
damage to upper motor neurons will result in deviation of the tongue contralateral to the damaged upper motor neurons; decussate in the corticobulbar tracts
*** come back to this one
dysarthria or disarticulation
slurring of speech
