Exercise 21.5 Flashcards
The study of tissues
Histology
The four basic tissue types
- Epithelial
- Connective
- Muscle
- Nervous
Widespread throughout the body, covering the body’s outer and inner surfaces, lining the inner surfaces of tubular organs
Epithelial
Main functions are protection and transport. Specialized functions include sensory reception and the maintenance of the body’s gametes
Epithelial
What is the shape of the outermost cells of epithelial tissues
Squamous, cuboidal, or columnar (all are polygonal)
How many layers of cells are there in epithelial tissues?
Epithelial tissues are simple if there’s one layer of cells; stratified if there are two or more
Contain large amount of material external to the cells, called extra cellular matrix
Connective tissue
Extracellular matrix
Consists of fibers embedded in ground substance (collagen and elastic)
Fibers are tough, flexible, and inelastic
Collagen
Fibers stretch when pulled, returning to their original length when the pull is removed
Elastic fibers
Contain blood vessels
Connective tissues
Forms much of the packing material of the body and fills in the spaces between other tissues
Loose connective tissues
The cell that produces the matrix of loose and other soft connective tissues
Fibroblast
Composes the second layer of the skin
Dense irregular fibrous connective tissue
The space within any hollow organ
