Exercise Flashcards
During exercise our breathing rate ………. (decreases/increases)
increases
What do our muscle cells do more of when we exercise? What does this use up/produce more of?
Our muscle cells respire more therefore they use up more oxygen and produce carbon dioxide
When exercising we need to:
(1) Supply ……….. (more oxygen/more carbon dioxide) to our ………. (blood cells/muscle cells)
(2) Remove ………. (oxygen/carbon dioxide) from our ………. (blood cells/muscle cells)
(1) more oxygen, muscle cells
(2) carbon dioxide, muscle cells
What does the brain detect in exercise and what does this lead to?
During exercise, the brain detects a change in carbon dioxide concentration which leads to an increased breathing rate, depth of breathing and heart rate.
Design and describe an experiment to investigate the effect of exercise on breathing rate.
1) Firstly, measure the person’s heart and breathing rate when they are sitting still (this is the baseline)
2) Throughout the one minute of exercise, continue to measure the heart and breathing rate of the person
3) Measure the person’s heart and breathing rate immediately afterwards, 2mins afterwards and then 4mins afterwards and record how long it takes for it to go back to the baseline
