Executive Functioning Flashcards
Executive Functioning
integrated cognitive process determines goal firected and purposeful behavior, includes formulation of goals, initiation/behavior, anticipation of the consequences fo actions, planning and organization of behavior in a sequential order, monitoring and adaptation of behavior to fit a particular task or context.
Dorsolateral prefrontal cortex
associated with manipulation of info held on line
Medial prefrontal cortex
assoc w/ arousal, drive, and motivation (damage leads to apathy)
Orbito-frontal cortex
assoc. w/ personality and maintenance of appropraite social behavior.
Formal Measures
Functional Assessment of Verbal Reasoning and Executive Strategies (FAVRES), Cognitive-Linguistic Quick Test (CLQT),
subtests of other tests - clock drawing, porteus maze, Raven’s progressive matrices/color matrices, Ruff figural fluency tests, Wisconsin Card Sort
WILL THESE TEST TELL YOU MORE ABOUT THE DISORDER THAN YOU CAN ALREADY TELL FROM OBSERVATION?
Treatment
Instructional techniques - teach very specific routines with high amounts of practice, Practice Space Retrieval - Tracey and Ava,
Metacognitive Strategies - goal to retrain or compensate for executive dysfunction by deliberate use of strategies to enhance self-regulation.
Behavioral Interventions - constant, consistent feedback regarding behavior.
Environmental Adaptations - usually in someone’s home/community
Areas of metacognitive strategies
1) self - instruction (teach client to use self talk during tasks)
2) group problem solving therapy - group scenarios that participants are asked to come up with a solution together
3) Interactive Strategy Modeling Training - teach participants to use metacognitive strategies to to solve verbal problems.
4) Goal attainment Scale - method to set goals and monitor outcomes.
5) Goal Management - using steps (stop, define, list, learn, do it, check)
7) Time Management - learning to set timers to ensure get something done (laundry)
8) Awareness training - if aren’t buying what we are selling then need to be aware, need to know why they are doing what they are doing, awareness, predict own performance
Behavioral Interventions
1) positive behavior support
- behavioral management techniques (color coding - green, yellow red)
2) social intervention
- social modeling, role-playing, verbal feedback, visual feedback, audio, self-monitoring, behavioral rehearsal first, and social reinforcement.
Environmental Adaptations
set up structures for a time when trouble may arise in community (organize room, set up planner)
*How I can impact performance when I am not there.
