Excretory system Flashcards
What is Excretion?
Excretion is the process of removing waste products from the body.
What wastes does Excretion include?
CO2, nitrogenous waste (urea), salt and water
What are the wastes generated by?
This is primarily carried out by the lungs (respiratory system), the kidneys (urinary system), and the skin (integumentary system).
What does the Liver play a vital role in?
the liver plays a vital role in converting toxic waste into less toxic material before it is removed from the body
What is a waste produced produced by cellular respiration?
Carbon Dioxide
What happens if CO2 is not removed from your body?
If CO2 is not removed from the body, it can change the pH of the blood and make it acidic.
What does the level of CO2 in our blood influence?
breathing rate, as it is important that it is removed efficiently from the body.
What do kidneys do?
Filter wastes from the blood
What does each kidney contain and how much of them?
Each kidney contains 1 million nephrons, the tiny structures that filter waste like urea, salts and water out of the blood and create urine.
What does Urine travel do?
Urine passes from the kidneys, down the ureters into the bladder
What do the kidneys play an important role in?
The kidneys also play an important role in regulating the water balance of the body
How does excretion occur through our skin?
Sweating
Sweat will remove what wastes from our body?
Sweat will remove some water, salts and small amounts of urea from the body.
What does the volume of water in our body do?
influences the concentration of the blood and other substances in it.
What happens when there is more water in our bodies than we need?
the kidneys will remove the excess creating dilute urine.
