Excretion System Flashcards
Cortex
Main area of the kidney
all of the nephron except the loop of Henle is located in the Cortex
The Kidney is located…
at the back of the abdominal wall
Medulla
Triangularly shaped inner areas of kidney
Arranged in a semi circle
Very salty, for filtration
Nephrons
The functional unit of the kidney
Performs filtration, reabsorption, and secretion
1 1/4 Million per Kidney
Located in lower cortex
Afferent Arteriole
Vessel that leads blood plasma into glomerulus
Renal capsule
Contains glomerulus and bowman’s capsule
Glomerulus
A group of capillaries where some filtration takes place
Bowman’s Capsule
Glomerulus filters liquid into this capsule
Proximal Convoluted Tubule
The tubule that carries fluid to the loop of henle Is wavy (convoluted)
Loop of Henle
A vessel that moves fluid through the medulla, which is salty, removing water and concentrating the fluid into urine.
Distal Convoluted Tubule
The tubule that leads the urine from the loop of henle to the collecting tubule
Is wavy
Collecting Tubule
Where all nephrons lead
Moves urine to the ureter
Renal Pyramids
Structures that make up the medullas
Renal Artery
Brings blood from Aorta to the kidneys for filtration
Renal Vein
Brings blood away from the kidneys to the Inferior Vena Cava
