Excretion Flashcards
what is excretion
the removal of the waste substances of metabolic reactions and substances in excess of requirements.
what are some examples of excretion
- CO2 produced in respiration is excreted by the lungs
- urea, excess water and excess iron are excreted by the kidneys
- urea produced in the liver, needs to be excreted because at high temperatures in denatures enzymes

what are the roles of the kidney
- excretion of toxic waste products
- osmoregulation: maintaining water and salt content of blood and body fats
what is osmoregulation
maintaining water and salt content of blood and body fats
what does a nephron consist of
a glomerulus with it’s renal capsule and renal tube
what is a glomerulus
knots of capillaries
describe the process of urine being formed in the glomerulus
what is a nephron
the functional unit of the kidney
