Q

Why do we need to breathe

A

Ventilation (breathing) ensures that air with a high conc. of oxygen is taken into the longs, and air with a high conc.not co2 is removed from the lungs.

This maintains high conc gradients between air (inside your alveoli) and blood, increasing the rate of diffusion of oxygen and co2

Q

How does breathing work

A

Increasing the volume of the thorax decreases the air pressure on the lungs to bellow at,spherical pressure. Air flows into the lungs, inflating them until the pressure in the alveoli equals that of the atmosphere.

Decreasing the volume of the thorax increases the pressure in the lungs and air flows out until the pressure in the alveoli drops to atmospheric pressure

Q

Explain breathing in

A

Intercostal muscles and diaphragm contract

Thorax volume increases

This decreases the pressure so air flows in

Q

Explain breathing out

A

Intercostal muscles and diaphragm relax

Thorax volume decreases

This increases the pressure, so air flows out
