Excercise Flashcards
What are the physical effects of exercise?
- increases your breathing rate and makes you breathe more deeply to meet the demand for extra oxygen
- increases the speed at which your heart pumps
What is glucose from food stored as?
Glycogen
Name the two places glycogen is stored
It’s main store is in the liver. Each muscle has its own store of glycogen
How is glycogen used during vigorous exercise?
Muscles are rapidly using glucose and so some stored glycogen is converted back to glucose to provide more energy
When do we use anaerobic respiration?
When the body cannot supply enough oxygen to your muscles
What does anaerobic mean?
Without oxygen
What is the equation for anaerobic respiration?
Glucose -> energy + lactic acid
How is lactic acid produced?
The incomplete breakdown of glucose
What are the negative effects of anaerobic respiration?
- a build up of lactic acid is painful
- causes muscle fatigue, so the muscles get tired and stop contracting efficiently
- does not release as much energy as aerobic respiration
Name an advantage of anaerobic respiration
You can keep using your muscles for a little while longer
Why does the blood flow at a faster rate when you exercise?
When you exercise, your muscle activity increases, and so more glucose and oxygen needs to be supplied to the muscle cells. A faster blood flow means that the extra carbon dioxide can be removed from the muscle cells
