Exams Flashcards
Properties
properties are characteristics that we use to describe different types of matter
Physical properties
a characteristic of a substance that can be observed without changing the substance into another substance.
ex.
density
melting point
boiling point
Chemical properties
is a characteristic of a substance that can only be observed by changing it into a different substance or during a chemical reaction.
ex. The ability to burn Ability to tarnish Ability to rust Ability to decompose Ability to react with other chemicals
Atom
The smallest piece of an element
Elements are different types of atoms and have unique masses and sizes
Molecule
When two or more atoms bond, they form a molecule.
Compound
Substance formed by the combining of two or more different elements
(a chemical formula describes what types and how many atoms make up the compound)
Mixture
A mixture is when 2 or more substances combined but don’t react to form something new
What does scale measure?
A scale measures the mass of an object in grams.
Mass
the amount of matter ano object
