pressure describes?

A
  • the force of a substance over an area
  • provide a force in all directions
  • gas pressing out on all sides container & molecules bounce off

14
Q

why does the atmosphere stay around the earth?

A
  • gravity holds gas molecules together

- molecules are escaping into space in upper part of atmosphere

16
Q

Troposphere

A
  • contains 90% of the air that makes up atmosphere
  • 90% of atmosphere is contained w/in first few miles above earth
  • changing sphere
  • weather occurs
17
Q

Stratosphere

A
  • above troposphere
  • layered sphere
  • contains ozone layer
18
Q

ozone layer?

A

-absorbs ultraviolet radiation coming from sun
-people would get severe sunburns w/out it
-

19
Q

gases make atmosphere?

A

nitrogen- 78%

oxygen- 20.95

20
Q

what causes wind?

A

unequal heating of earth
temp diffs make pressure diffs
high pressure air masses move to low pressure air masses

21
Q

humidity

A

how much water vapor is in the air

indicator of precipitation fog or dew

22
Q

relative humidity means?

A

the % of water in the air has the maximum amount of water vapor in it.

23
Q

what 3 things require a cloud to form

A
  1. water vapor in air
  2. air that cools (air expands in upper part of atmosphere
  3. dust particles to condense around
24
Q

what is a cloud not?

A

a gas

25
Q

greenhouse effect

A
  • gases in atmosphere stop some of the heat from escaping into space. These gases are called greenhouse gases
  • the natural process between the sun, the atmosphere and the Earth is called the ‘Greenhouse Effect’, because it works the same way as a greenhouse.
  • windows of a greenhouse play the same role as the gases in the atmosphere, keeping some of the heat inside the greenhouse.
26
Q

negative green house

A

more heat from sun would be trapped in atmosphere increasing temp on earth

27
Q

pos of green house

A

keep planet at liveable temp

28
Q

diff between weather and climate

A

weather- short term changes in atmospher (mins to mons)
Ex. temp, humidity, cloudiness, visibility, wind

climate- long term changes of weather in area
Ex. seasons
