Electricity and Magnetism Flashcards
. Are all metals magnetic? If not, what materials are magnetic?
Iron, nickel, cobalt, neodymium
The pole of the magnet is where the magnetic force is the
strongest
Why does this compass needle face north
The compass needle is a magnet (iron)
Earth has a magnetic field and the needle is pushed by the field
No electricity running thru a wire makes compass look like…
all compasses pointing N ->
Electricity running thru a wire makes compass look like…
all compasses pointing in a circle clockwise
When we made a full circuit with wire in these experiments what did t show us
When electricity flows, it creates a magnetic field around a wire
How to make a coil of wire have a stronger magnetic field around it?
1.) put something magnetic in the middle of the coils
(iron core)
2.) # of coil increase
3.) increase electricity running through the coil
How do you turn the magnetic field on and off in an electromagnet?
turn electricity on and off
What are parts of an electric motor?
- 2 magnets
- coil of wire
- battery
How does an electric motor work?
coils of wire get pulled towards permanent magnet
How does reversing the direction of the electricity that goes into the coil produce sound?
The electromagnet is making it vibrate up and down making the diaphragm vibrate which produces sound waves.
What are some real-life examples of technologies that use electromagnetism?
A generator rotates a coil magnets to produce electricity.
