Exam Revision Flashcards
What are the body regions
Axial subdivision, appendicular subdivision, upper extremity and its subdivisions and the lower extremity and its subdivisions
Which region contains the head neck and torso?
Axial
Types of lipids
Triglycerides, phospholipids, prostaglandins and steroids
Function of lipids
Energy source, structural role and integral part of cell membranes
What are lipids?
Water insoluble organic molecules
Which is the most abundant lipid and most concentrated source of energy?
Triglycerides
Steroids
Cholesterol and cortisol, involved in many structural and functional roles
Prostaglandins
“Tissue hormones” effects are many and varied, however they are released in response to a specific stimulus and are then inactivated
Protein functions
Provide structure
Act as receptors
Provide energy
Catalyse chemical reactions
Transport substances in the blood
Communicate information to cells
Protection against pathogens
Fibrous proteins
Long slender shape of muscle tissue, gives ability to contract and relax. Strong, durable and hydrophobic. Eg collagen
Globular proteins
Globes or spheres that are highly reactive and hydrophilic. Eg haemoglobin and enzymes
Types of polysaccharides
Starch, glycogen and cellulose
Interstitial fluid
Interstitial fluid is the extracellular fluid not contained within blood vessels
Endoplasmic reticulum
System of channels that function in transporting, synthesising and storing materials. Rough ER contains ribosomes which make proteins. Smooth ER makes phospholipids, steroid hormones, regulates concentration of Ca2+, metabolises some carbohydrates and breaks down some toxins
Valves of heart
Tricuspid, bicuspid, aortic and pulmonary
