Exam Q 27 Flashcards
Both CS^2 and CCl^4 are colourless liquids at room temperature:
Predict the type of bond formed between carbon and chlorine atoms in a CCI^4 molecule
polar covalent
Define electronegativity
Electronegativity is the relative attraction that an atom in a molecule has for the shared pair of electrons in a covalent bond
What is the valency of carbon in CCl^4
4
State and account for the shape of CCl^4 molecule
It has four bond pairs and no lone pairs so it will have a tetrahedral shape
Draw a dot and cross diagram to show the arrangement of all the valence shell electrons in a CS^2 molecule
Draw: crabon in the middle with 4 x’s and draw a S on each side with two lone pairs each and two electrons.
Have them touching to show that they are covalent bonds sharing electrons and switch the 4 carbon electrons with the 2 electrons on both Sulfur atoms
