Exam Q 25 Flashcards
Define energy level
an energy level is defined as the fixed energy value that an electron in an atom may have
Write the electron configuration for sulfur in its ground state, showing the arrangement in atomic orbitals of the highest energy electrons
1s^2, 2s^2, 2p^6, 3s^2, 3p^4
show: 3 boxes with one up arrow in each and one arrow down in the first box to represent 3px^2, 3py^1, 3pz^1/ sp^4
how many (i) energy levels and (ii) orbitals are occupied in a sulfur atom in its ground state
(i) energy levels: 3
(ii) orbitals: 9 as one orbital has 2 electrons, applying this we get 7 full orbitals and are left with two orbitals 3py^1 and 3pz^1 which are 2 orbitals which are not full so add these 2 onto the 7 and we get 9
