Q

Explain why some alpha particles were deflected at large angles as they passed through the gold foil

A

They were repelled when passing near to the nucleus of the gold atom that is of positive charge like the alpha particles

Q

Why were some alpha particles reflected back along their original paths?
Why did this only happen to a small number of alpha particles?

A

Some: As they collided with the positive nucleus of the atom

Small: were reflected as the nucleus is very small and dense. Most of the atom is empty space.

Q

Draw a labelled diagram to show the new structure of the atom proposed by Rutherford

A

Label the nucleus and the electron shell/cloud

a small coloured in circle with a large ring around it is sufficient as long as it is labelled corectly.
