Q

In the context of place, explain the meaning of endogenous factors and exogenous factors

A

Endogenous factors are factors that originate inside the place. They include relief, geology, land-use, economic and demographics characteristics of the area etc. Exogenous factors originate outside of the place and they are links and relationships that place have with other places. Relationships with other places are in this case are shown by the flows of people, resources, money, investment and resources.

For example, the Brick lane as a place has an endogenous factor of the built environment of the place being mainly Gregorian style, and this was affected by exogenous factor of shifting flows of people, as with in-migration of Bangladeshi community Spitalfields Mosque was built.

Q

Evaluate the usefulness of Figure 5a and Figure 5b in showing the nature and extent if either economic change in the area.

A

The economic change in the area of the High Level Bridge is effectively represented by the figure 5a and 5b.

On the figure 5a, industrial developments and housing are located along the river. There are also present facilities for the shipping in the river, and the bridge can be seen in the background, suggesting further developments.

While on the figure 5b, the residential buildings are now replaced with the industrial storage facilities. And on the background now 2 bridges can be seen, what demonstrates that area is still actively if not more commercially and industrially developed, with stronger transportation links. This suggests that over the time period of 80 years area saw a significant change in the economic characteristics, even though the data for economic characteristics such as trade flows is not provided.

Nevertheless, it can be argued that figure 5a due to it having a rather subjective nature may be less reliable in presenting economic characteristics of the area in the past. But in the combination with figure 5b with more precise details, figures are useful in showing the nature and partially the extent of the economic change of the area.

Q

Assess the usefulness of house prices data such as that shown in figure 6 in helping to understand the nature if a local place, comparing it with other quantitative sources that you used in studying place.

A

House price data primarily shows evidence of economic change in the area, what can be useful in understanding the nature of local place. For example, the rapid price increase particularly during certain periods of time such as 1996 in the figure where prices for all types of housing nearly doubled, might be linked to growing prosperity at a local scale, but as well possible gentrification linked with some people not being able to afford their rent anymore.

Nevertheless, in order to provide an accurate understanding of local place more sources of data are needed such as census data or ward profiles. For example, the census data for Marylebone Ward provides the brake down of the population by their age, suggesting that 76.1% of population are of age (18-64), thus many people are of a working age and contributing to the economic development of the area, census data as well includes the data on the population structure based on their ethnicity, religion, households etc. This provides a much more wider and detailed understanding of the nature of a place.

Therefore, house prices as the data piece may not be enough to provide a full and precise understanding of the nature of the place. Therefore a combination of quantitative sources such as census data, ward profiles, house prices, crime rates are needed to provide an accurate insight into the characteristics of the place and thus to form an understanding of its nature.
