Q

Using figure 4 and your own knowledge, evaluate attempts to influence specific place meanings (London Park City)

A

A number of players such as London National Park city foundation, the Mayor of London are trying to influence London place-meaning by promoting its biodiversity and place meaning.

The National Park City movement promote outdoor activities such as ‘cycling, outdoor play, kayaking, ballgames’, what encourages people to participate in new activities, create new attachments to a place, as a place where your can enjoy nature and relax.
Due to various stakeholders and participants including ‘individuals, families, groups’, who are likely to have an insider perspective on place and more knowledge about it coordinating in the project it is likely that London will alter its place meaning to one which is biodiverse and ‘green’, place where individual can also reconnect with nature as mentioned in extract ‘urban lives are bound up with – and enriched by – nature’.

On the other hand, there is no present data to evaluate the success of the stakeholders in their attempt to alter London place-meaning over time.

Therefore, based on the information provided in the figure 6 it is likely that over time place meaning of London will alter towards a place where individuals can reconnect with nature, nevertheless it can be hard to evaluate its success due to lack of data.
