Benign prostatic hyperplasia: Diagnosis
- Digital rectal exam (Draw PSA first)
International Prostate Symptom Score
- 1-7 is mild
- 8-19 is moderate
- 20-35 is severe
Benign prostatic hyperplasia: Treatment/medications
- 5-alpha reductase inhibitor (may take up to 6 months to improve) (decreases size of prostate)
finesteride (Proscar) (important)
dutasteride (Avodart) (important) - Alpha-1 selective blocking agents (important) (Increase urinary stream)

Benign prostatic hyperplasia: 5-alpha reductase inhibitor side effects
- ED
- Decreased libido
- dizziness
- orthostatic hypotension
Benign prostatic hyperplasia: Alpha-1 selective blocking agents side effects
- Peripheral vasodilation
- decreased peripheral vascular resistance
- Orthostatic hypotension, tachycardia, and syncope

Transurethral resection of prostate (TURP)
post op
- urinary catheter with retention balloon placed
- traction- uncomfortable urge to void continuously
- continuous bladder irrigation for hematuria
Benign prostatic hyperplasia: Teaching
- no meds that cause urinary retention
- no alcohol
- no drinking a lot of fluids at once
- no caffiene
- no diuretics
- Void when you have the urge
- Increase sex means decrease in prostate fluid
Syphilis: Treatment
- Penicillin IM injection one time
Late latent and tertiary- receive dose each week for 3 weeks
Gonorrhea: symptoms
- Male: dysuria and penile discharge (important)
- Female: change in vaginal discharge, urinary frequency, or dysuria; ascending spread that can cause endometritis, salpingitis, and pelvic inflammatory disease
Gonorrhea: Treatment
- ceftriaxone (Rocephin) IM single dose
- Typically occurs with chlamydia and will be treated at same time
