Exam 4 Definitions Flashcards
Blending Hypothesis
Genetic material from both parents mix, like yellow and blue paint mix to make green.
Particulate Hypothesis/The Gene Idea
Parents pass on discrete heritable units that retain their identities in future offspring.
Gregor Mendel
Started studying in about 1857, used garden peas.
Character
A heritable feature, like hair or eye color.
Trait
A variant of a character, like brown hair and green eyes.
True Breeding
Always passes down the same phenotypic traits.
Hybridization
The study used by Mendel to study the process of inheritance.
P Generation
The parents, true breeding in Mendel’s experiments.
F1 Generation
Hybrid offspring of the P generation. All of the offspring had the dominant phenotype.
F2 Generation
Hybrid offspring of the F1 generation. 3/4 of this generation were the dominant phenotype, 1/4 was recessive.
