Exam 3 Week 9 Objective & Covers Periodontal Disease Flashcards
List and explain limitations of using radiographs for diagnosis of periodontal disease
- 2D image of 3D structure
- Does not show exact morphology of bone
- Does not show disease activity
- Never substitute for a clinical periodontal assessment
- Does not show early bone loss or early furcation involvement
- Does not show tooth mobility
List and explain benefits of radiographs in diagnosis of periodontal disease
- Bony changes
- Tooth and root morphology
- Widening of PDL
- Furcation’s
- Abscess
- Local Factors
- Pathology
Compare and contrast healthy periodontium with disease
Notability
Periodontal examination is incomplete without ___ radiographs
accurate
Describe the difference between horizontal and vertical bone loss
Vertical
- Greater degree of bone loss on the interproximal aspect of one tooth compared to the adjacent tooth
- May require surgical tx to try to regenerate bone
Horizontal Bone Loss
- alveolar crest > 2mm from CEJ
- Lamina Dura usually lost the well defined radiopaque edge
- Hard to determine wether disease is active or stable
Describe the distribution of periodontal disease
Extent
- Localized is less than or equal to 30 percent of surfaces
- Generalized is greater than 30 percent of surfaces
Compare and contrast the severity of periodontal disease
written out on paper
Identify calculus on radiographs and as well as other factors contributing to periodontal disease.
Furcation
-involvment: Loss of bone in furca region
Widened PDL
-Often signifies mobility
