Stigma
(stigma are beliefs that poor personal choices, “moral failing,” and defects of character are to blame for the disease)
What are the universal LOP for substance abuse?
-Universal interventions target the general population and are not directed at a specific risk group.
What are the selective LOP for substance abuse?
-Selective interventions target those at higher-than-average risk for substance abuse; individuals are identified by the magnitude and nature of risk factors for substance abuse to which they are exposed.
What are the indicated LOP for substance abuse?
-Indicated interventions target those already using or engaged in other high-risk behaviors to prevent heavy or chronic use.
Results/Consequences of abuse of substances:
-Consequences of drug use vary based on the pharmacokinetics of the drug used.
-Once the drug has left the system, the person experiences a rebound effect.
-In cocaine use, an under stimulation of the C N S results in depression and decreased energy.
-Increased risk for comorbid mental disorders, sexually transmitted infections (S T I’s) and other drug related adverse consequences
-The variation of the adverse effects again relates to the pharmacokinetics of the drug used.
-Maternal and infant risks
-Effects on adolescent brain development
-Increased use in older adults
