Exam #3 Study Guide Flashcards
What are “ganglia?”
group of nerve cell bodies
What are “nuclei?”
group of neuron cell bodies
CNS includes __________ & __________.
brain & spinal cord
PNS includes __________, __________, & __________.
cranial nerves, spinal nerves, & ganglia.
Myelinated vs. unmyelinated nerve fibers.
MYELINATED: one axon, has myelin sheath, sends impulses by saltatory conduction. (The impulse “jumps” from one neurofibril node to another…known as Node of Ranvier.)
UNMYELINATED: multiple axons, no myelin sheath, sends impulses by continuous conduction. (The impulse travels along the entire length of the axon.)
What is a nerve?
a bundle of axons
What are the 2 types of synapses?
electrical (ions over gap junctions) & chemical (neurotransmitters)
What is a synapse?
a junction between two neurons
