EXAM 3 Rules of the Board Pt2 Flashcards
What is the appropriate approach if a pharmacist notices a violation of pharmacy law or rules?
Shall report to the board
-don’t discuss these matters with nonmembers of the profession
Can an intern do anything a pharmacist can do?
Yes, as long they are under the direct supervision of the pharmacist
ex:
-verify prescription
-open/close the pharmacy
What needs to be on the ID of the pharmacist?
-Name (not necessarily full name)
-title
If the pharmacist or the pharmacy site moves, what needs to be done?
-notify the board IMMEDIATELY
When must criminal convictions be reported to the board?
within 10 days
-only convictions (plead guilty in court), not allegations
What should be considered when transferring Rx to other pharmacies?
ex: get a gift card if you transfer your prescriptions
-use professional judgement
-incomplete med profile
-drugs the patient takes may not show up in the DUR when not billed through the insurance
-may cause harm if they take something from other pharmacies and you don’t know about it
You want to hire a tech, what does the tech require before starting?
-must be registered with the board (regular and certified techs)
-sign affidavit: confirm that they have read the pharmacy rules
-pay fees
-background check
Who is responsible for the requirements of the techs
PIC
-PICs are not necessarily responsible to regards for the pharmacists but for the techs
What can a pharmacy tech do?
-not exactly defined
-they can perform tasks associated with the preparation and dispensing process under the supervision of the pharmacist
-but not the tasks that need to be done by a pharmacist or intern
What can certified techs do?
-certified techs may (do not have to allow them)
-receive new or transferred oral medical and Rx orders
-transfer copies of oral meds and Rx orders between pharmacy sites
NON-CONTROLLED!!!!!!!!!! the DEA doesn’t allow techs do deal with controlled substances in this matter
-verify the content of unit dose carts or automated dispensing systems prepared by other techs
->BUT needs additional verification with barcode technology or verification by a licensed healthcare provider before administering to a patient
What is the technician-pharmacist ratio within a pharmacy?
6 techs (certified or not): 1 pharmacist
can seek board approval if you need more than that, anything you add must be certified (what if you have 1 certified and 5 non-certified, does the added still need to be certified???)
-techs have the same ID requirement as pharmacists: name and title
-the intern does not count as techs in the ratio
