What to do if a prescription for a drug does not indicate how many times the prescription may be refiled?
The prescription may not be refilled unless the pharmacist is subsequently authorized to do so by the practitioner
Differentiate drug order and prescription
Drug order- Written order for a drug or device for patient in an outpatient institution
Prescription- written order for a drug or device for an outpatient
Who can prescribe prescriptions
Physicians, veterenarians, dentists, podiatrists, optometrist licensed in IN, APRNs, PAs, (no pharmacists)

- If drug contains or is derived from opium, a statement that the drug is an opioid

What is important to note about anabolic steroids and prescription vallidity
prescription and drug orders are only valid if they are issued for legitimate medical ppurpose (no steroid use for funzies or bodybuilding)

- Pharmacy that holds permit issues by indiana BOP
- Remote location under jurisdiction of indiana BoP
- Licensed health care facility
What can individuals who are members of the Indiana BoP, designated BoP employees and all law enforcement officers do?
- carry firearm when performing official duties
- Execute and serve warrants and subpoenas
- Make arrests without warrant for suspected CS felony
- seize property
- Perform other enforcement duties as designated by the BoP
What is the law on samples and coupons (PDMA) (prescription drug marketing act)
PDMA bans the sale, purchase or trade of a drug sample or drug coupon, and bans counterfeiting of drug coupons.
Practitioners must ask for drug samples in writing
Community pharmacies cannot have drug samples at anytime
Established record keeping, storage and handling requirements for drug samples
in addition to the PDMA, what does indiana specify
- you cannot remove a sample from its original packaging, repackage it and then sell/exchnage it
- You cannot deliver a drug sample to someone after it has expired

Why can we not substitute a generic for a brand name for vets
We cant because they know more about animals than us. They need to get a new script if they want anotehr drug
What is a law regarding written prescriptions and how they are outlined? compare to electric or verbal prescription.
In indiana, written prescriptions must have two signature lines (dispense as written and may substitute)
They are not required in electronic or verbal prescription
What are some unique requirements when considering generic substitution for medicaid and childrens health insurance program (CHIP)
The pharmacist must substitute the product that results in lowest price unless
- The words brand medically necessary are written or transmitted electronically in practitioners own handwriting
or
- Orally stating that generic may not be substituted, and subsequetly forwarding a covering prescription that has “brand medically necessary” included
When can biologic be substituted
If product has been determined to be interchangeable by FDA (purple book)
Prescribing practitioner has indicated “may substitute”
Pharmacist has informed customer of substitution
After completing substitution, the prescriber is informed of name and manufacturer of biologic product dispensed
A Pharmacist or naloxone entity who dispenses naloxone must do what things
- register annually with the state department or local health department
- Instruct the individual receiving product to summon emergency services immediately
- provide education and training on drug overdose response and tx
- Provide drug addiction treatment and referral info
